World class female athletes take over The Point in a celebration of their achievements on and off the court.
The biggest names in women’s basketball were on hand at The Point this past Monday. They were greeted by the boisterous cheers of 300 young women ballers from the local community. The Point has never been so packed – so full of energy and enthusiasm.
It was a celebration of women’s athletic accomplishments in basketball—a rally intended to inspire the next generation of female athletes.
After running drills under the watchful eyes of legendary pro baller and current pro coach Michael Cooper, the young hoopers sat down for a Q-and-A session with the 2007 US Women’s National Team. Olympic gold medalist and Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller handled moderation duties with grace and humor.
Lisa Leslie. Sue Bird. Diana Taurasi. Swin Cash. Women’s pro league president Donna Orender. They spoke to the girls about chasing goals, dedication, and the love of the game.
A celebrity scrimmage followed. It featured two-time Olympic gold medalist and World Cup soccer winner Brandi Chastain. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Ruthie Bolton. Paralympian and “Amazing Race” contestant Sarah Reinertsen. Missy Peregrym of “Heroes” fame.
Off the court, action included a silent auction to benefit the Nike ‘Let Me Play’ community effort and video interviews for the chance to star in a Nike commercial.
The night was a tremendous success. In the words of Lisa Leslie, “If just one girl hears what we’re saying, our work here is done.”
