If These Courts Could Talk: Washington Park

This South LA gymnasium is an athletic oasis in the city for ballers ages 4 to 40 and beyond.

The pristine, white brick walls of the Washington Park Gymnasium could easily be a tagger’s dream come true. Yet, under the watchful eyes of center director Dino Smiley, the entire facility looks as though it was built just yesterday.

Rumor has it that when community elders were given a tour of the new facility, they were so touched by the new center that a “hands off” order was passed down to the street.

Looking at the Wash Park Gym, you can see that order still stands.

“One of the things I like about Washington Park is there’s just no problems. No gang violence. No difficulties with graffiti.” Smiley comments, “There’s a respect for this place in the community. Everything looks the same as the day we opened it.”

He’s not exaggerating. Both the indoor court and the two blacktops outside are maintained to perfection. They’re b-ball oases, home to some of the most prestigious and unique leagues in the city. A children’s league. T-Ware’s Women’s Drew League. A league for ballers over the age of 40. Even Drew League Games, THE premiere pro-am league in the city of Los Angeles.

The gym is also a go-to spot for ballers from around the way. And Nike hosts an open run at the park every Thursday starting at 6pm. For those with a little grey in their goatee, Washington Park offers a pickup game for ballers over the age of 40 on Thursday evenings. But don’t get any ideas, young guns, these guys can still move.

Thinking about coming through but not sure if you can hang? Expect to go head to head with ultra-competitive players with serious hoop dreams. Weekend warriors balling with neighbors and friends. Experienced players who’ve seen the blacktop glory days but still can’t stay away from the courts.

Washington Park caters to hoopers at every level. Those with serious love for the game, their community, and respect for the center will always be welcome.
