The Hollywood YMCA may be on the down-low, but it isn’t just for Hollywood insiders.
Just within dunking distance of The Point and nestled on the corner of West Sunset and Schrader Boulevard is one of Los Angeles’s best-kept secrets. The Hollywood YMCA offers not one, but two pristine hardwood courts as well as a long list of fitness classes, equipment, and leagues to keep you at the top of your game year round.
Just ask the center director Annie Dyess. She keeps the place running as smooth as a fade-away jumper. Dyess boasts, “The ‘Y’ offers basketball programs for players ages five to forty-five. We’re a community center with a strong family vibe.”
Dyess clearly takes pride in the center and the basketball programs offered for both kids and adults. For the young hoopers, there’s the widely-known junior program named after the Purple and Gold. Two eight-week sessions in the winter and summer keep the kids running, gunning, training, and dreaming hard.
And in the fall, the Hollywood ‘Y’ runs a junior travel team. The squad ventures out into the city of Los Angeles where they face off against 26 other participating YMCAs. Teams are coached by parents, volunteers, or high school-aged hoopers participating in the YMCA Teen Center.
When the kids aren’t fine-tuning their free-throws and layups, the older players take over. Some of the best ballers from in and around the community converge on the Hollywood YMCA to get their pickup game on. And don’t be surprised if you find yourself going head to head with a celebrity; after all, this is Hollywood.
“We get all kinds of famous people,” Dyess explains. “Justin Timberlake plays here when he’s in town, and Nick Cannon is here all the time. His whole family plays up here. The best part about having celebs at our facility is they always play with the kids.”
Good thing it’s a facility fit for a celebrity. With a gym, two pools, a gravity room, and two slick hardwood courts, the Hollywood YMCA is perfect for the serious baller who is equally serious about elevating his or her game through fitness and training.
So it’s the best of both worlds: community feel, top-notch talent. Even though the vibe is friendly and welcoming, you’ll still need to bring you’re A-game to hang with Hollywood’s elite.
