Coach Billy Donovan leads Florida to first back-to-back NCAA titles in 15 years.
There have been plenty of great teams cutting down the nets at the end of the season, but very few have been able to repeat the feat. In fact, it had been 15 years since a team had repeated as national champions before Coach Billy Donovan led the Florida Gators to titles in 2006 and 2007. And they did it with an astounding record of 68-11 over the two championship seasons.
The unselfish play of stalwarts like Al Horford and Taurean Green – players who could have left early to go pro – typified the team ethos of Florida. They came back to make history as a team, not individuals. And they did, becoming the first school to win back-to-back titles with the same starting five. Florida always had the talent, whether they were the underdogs in 2006, or faced the goliath Greg Oden and Ohio State in 2007, but it was Coach Donovan’s balanced game plan of both inside and outside play that kept their opponents off balance and guessing.
Coach Donovan’s leadership and the players’ collective desire to win as a team separate them from past champions. This winning combination could have Gators fans saying the previously unthinkable: three-peat.
