WNBA Postseason 2007: Phoenix Wins First-Ever Title

Cappie Pondexter and Diana Taurasi lead Phoenix to the WNBA championship.

As they have all season long, Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter shouldered the load for Phoenix in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. Pondexter’s double-double – 26 points, 10 assists – and Taurasi’s 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists powered Phoenix to its first-ever WNBA title with a 108-92 win in Detroit on Septemer, 16th. Taurasi scored eight points, included two 3-pointers, in a 20-9 Phoenix run in the first quarter as Phoenix never relinquished the lead after that. Cappie Pondexter’s superb effort all series was rewarded with the Finals MVP award.

Detroit, trying to win back-to-back titles, got a combined 45 points from Deanna Nolan and Katie Smith – 27 and 18 points respectively. Phoenix’s Game 5 win marks the first time in WNBA history that a title has been won on the road.
