Katie Smith powers Detroit to win in Game 1 of Finals.

Detroit 108, Phoenix 100
In keeping with this year’s playoffs theme, Game 1 of the WNBA was a shootout with Detroit prevailing in the end 108-100 over Phoenix on Wednesday night. It was the highest scoring game in WNBA Finals history and both teams broke the WNBA Finals record for most points in a game. The previous record was 95 points. Leading the way for the Detroit was All-Star Katie Smith, who put together an all-around performance of 22 points, six rebounds and four rebounds. Her late free throws also helped seal the win. Smith’s effort was all the more important as fellow All Star Cheryl Ford sat out the game with a knee injury.

Phoenix’s Cappie Pondexter played strong all night and finished up with 27 points and Diana Taurasi tossed in 10 points, but it end it was not enough. Game 2 of the Finals is in Detroit on Saturday at 3:30pm ET.
