Now in its 16th season, the Los Angeles Summer Showcase is the place where serious female players go to re-ignite their game in preparation for the next high school or college season. As part of the Nike Say No Classic family, the LASS shares the same competitive spirit. Pushing players beyond their limits both as athletes and as members of the celebrated Los Angeles basketball community.

LASS founder Rhonda Windham grew up playing college ball in the very gym where on this scorching hot Saturday afternoon, “T’s Titans” are schooling the “Jedi Ballers.” When asked why she continues to host the league in the same old gym every year, Windham is straight up: “Because it’s hot and it’s funky. No air conditioning. No frills. I like to give these kids a little taste of adversity. This is the type of place where players have to really work.”

Windham speaks proudly about the league she started after a chance meeting with Nike Say No Classic founder Rod Smith. The league has since grown from 8 teams consisting of 90 players to 32 teams with almost 350 players. For 6 consecutive weekends, the girls battle for the chance to compete in the league championships held at The Point on August 11.

Rhonda explains, “When The LA Summer Showcase began, there were no pro leagues for women. The LASS was one of the few destinations for aspiring female players and coaches.” Since then, the league has served as a launching pad for some of the best coaches and athletes, including pro baller Lisa Leslie. She dunked for the first time in an LASS game. You better believe she worked for it.
