James “Fly” Williams

In the later part of the ‘70s, “Fly” served the opposition with ease. He was just that much better than everyone.

The Brownsville, Brooklyn native could do anything on the basketball court. He once handed out 63 points to a League All-Star. He attended Austin Peay State University and led the nation as a freshman with 29.4 points per contest. He had all the moves, and he would leave people in amazement over his game.

“Fly” now heads up the Fly Williams BRC Developmental Youth League in his hometown Brooklyn, teaching the finer points of the game he helped to make great.

QUOTES (as told to Anthony Gilbert):

On the BRC Developmental Youth League
“I deal with not only basketball. My basketball game speaks for itself and what I deal with now is basketball-focused, but I deal with life in general. It’s not bad to not be hip today. I basically just talk with the youth. I’m there for them. I can be reached day or night for basketball, life or guidance. The people of Brownsville know that I am here to help. I started the tournaments back in 1997 with money that I saved up, along with donations from people in the community. I started at the Brownsville Rec Center as a volunteer because I wanted to help and give back to the community doing whatever I could…the kids and parents took a liking to me and now we are well established in the community.”
