Congratulations to Nike big man Greg Oden, who’s headed to Portland as the #1 pick in the draft.
After weeks of speculation and anticipation, Portland finally made it official last night, taking Greg Oden with the top pick.
A three-time high school state champion and a big part of the Ohio State team that got within one game of a college title, Oden now takes his 7’0”, 260-pound frame and undeniable talent to the pro level.
Asked about the honor of being selected #1, and if it helped soften the blow of losing the final game of his college career, Oden showed the competitive spirit he’s known for: “No, not at all, I still lost. They still won two championships, in a row, and that doesn’t change. This feels good, but it’s two different categories. I’m always going to have that memory of that loss forever.”
That competitive fire, not to mention Oden’s talent and imposing physical presence, make him one of the most anticipated rookies to enter the league in years. He joins a young core – Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Jarrett Jack and newcomer Channing Frye (acquired in a deal last night) – that has fans in Rip City counting down the days until the 2007-08 season tips off.
