We’re taking a closer look at footwear classics from Nike Basketball history. This week: the Air Force 1 Lo.
The original high-top version of the Air Force 1 was the first shoe to bring Nike Air technology to the basketball court. But no discussion of Force would be complete without a salute to the low-top version, the Air Force 1 Lo. This shoe, which went on to become a cultural legend in its own right, began its legacy as a serious performer built for the demands of the Force player’s aggressive game.

The Lo maintained many innovative elements of the Hi, such as the variable width lacing system and concentric circle outsole. By trading in the high cut and ankle strap, it became a lighter, more breathable incarnation of the best-cushioned shoe on the market.
Players embraced this new way of bringing the benefits of Nike Air to the hardwood floor, with Force alums Moses Malone and Jeff Ruland among the Air Force 1 Lo’s early supporters.
Come back every Thursday for the origins of more classic Nike footwear!
